Illegal Immigration

Obama’s government has been responsible for the biggest number of deportation in history. Most of the deportation had been based on illegal immigrants with criminal background. “Headlines report that about 55 percent of the 396,906 individuals deported had felony or misdemeanor convictions” (Allison, p.1). How those that have not committed a felony end up being deported? It is thanks to the power that has been given to a police officer; authority to solicit and investigate migratory status.

Illegal immigration has been a problem that has gain popularity as the years go by. Security measurements had been found along to stop it, but the numbers increased every year, until deportation when up the roof. Now, “the Department of Homeland Security said in a 2010 report that the number of immigrants residing unauthorized in the US, 62 percent of whom come from Mexico, has declined from a peak of 11.8 million in January of 2007 to 10.8 million in January of 2010”(Miller, p 1).What are reasons that had caused this? When before coming to U.S. was most commonly everyone purpose in life.

The American dream has become hard to achieve in now days than years ago. Now states laws such as the ones implemented in Arizona and Alabama had cause a panic effect in illegal immigrants. Coming to America is not an easy journey. People scarify many things to cross the order. They even pay high prices to fulfil their dream. They do not know if they will make it and if they luckily make it how long will they stay in the U.S.

It has never been easy to make it in America, but now it seems to be difficult with all this restrictions that had been put upon. As well, apart from everything related to the law economy is another crucial trigger. Since 2007, all Americans had suffered from the economy decline. “The Pew Hispanic Center says that declining job opportunities sate side has played a vital part in the US no longer seeming as attractive an option as it ones were to potential migrants” (Miller, p 2). The most impacted industries that had been losing business are construction and manufacturing, which are the ones that generally hire illegal immigrants to work at a low rate for a hard labor with extended hours job. This creates frustration and no one with knowledge about the problem will throw themselves to it.

Obama’s administration at promoted wish to all those that are illegal immigrants; but instead, it has been all the contrary of what people thought. Even when the expansion of border patrol officer was under Bush administration; this did not have much effect on the decrease of immigrants entering and on the number of people being deported.

“Obama told a largely Latino audience Wednesday that his administration has not become more aggressive in deporting illegal immigrants, despite statistics to the contrary that he calls misleading”(Boyer & Stephen, p 1). Could this be true or it could also be that now we are putting more attention towards the illegal immigration issue. Because we have to realize that we had always had deportations, but they were never exposed on media as they are now. Now, we see often in the news about people who are detain at their work, home, schools, and public places. This is not necessary done by ICE officer, but also local police that check migratory status.

Harassment needs to stop we cannot still make U.S. portray a unfavorable image to do that decide to come here, because this can create an impact in the labour market. We have to realize that illegal immigrants are the one that take the jobs that usually an American would not this job that required hard work for a low paid. The Dual Market Theory states that, “ illegal immigrants are also temporary than legal immigrants, supply the labor demand in secondary jobs, and more willing to take jobs with high labour and poor working conditions” (Nadadur, p 6). Illegal immigrants are the ones how make the economy flow as need it because imagine having an economy without secondary jobs. There is no way that could be functioning properly we cannot have a country based on upper-middle class and up only.

We should think about more when it comes about illegal immigration, because even when people is against they forget about the benefit that brings to the country. I am not trying to say that is right to be illegal in a country, but they should have more consideration towards them and end all the unnecessary persecution against them. There are many other problems affecting out nation such as terrorism, drug, homicides, as many others that required the use of budget, which is been put into immigration. Now we should consider the entrance of illegal immigrant as want and not as a threat.

Reflection

English 1010 is a course based on the examines concepts of rhetoric, research, and argumentation placing a strong emphasis on the writing process, including invention, drafting, peer review, and revision, as described in the syllabus. In effective, I understand how to implement these skills to my writing process. The course textbooks were They Say I Say With Readings and Readings Rhetorically both of them came in handing. Since they provided me with tools that help me identify templates and readings that emphasized in a topic but with different opinions.

Assignments were four main assignments and a weekly module that was post it on Canvas. Canvas system work well for me since I will summit my assignment along with my group, and comment each others work. The module purpose was to get us in practice of how to prepare the assignments. The first assignment was a summary about one of the articles read for the modules. The assignment required an introduction to the author, representation of the main idea, maintain objective, keep it informative, and provide a coherent and cited the document. Even when seems to be a simple summary at the beginning I learn that is something that is more complex. My summary was about the article What You Eat Is Your Business by Radley Balko. This article caught my attention since it talks about obesity been a personal issue and not a public one. It gives strong points about how people should be responsible of it own instead of costing money on government for their obesity problems.

The second assignment was a rhetorical analysis which we have to choose on of the article from our readings and summarize the opposing views, set a main point, set reasons that support, show evidence, and explanation of the issue significance. I decided to write about the article What’s The Matter With Kids Today? by Amy Goldwasser the article had a powerful argument about humans been dependable on technology for the basic functions of life specially for teenagers, but it also contrasted the benefits obtained from it. In order to create this assignment we had to fallow a structure that consisted of an introduction and thesis, minimum of three rhetorical concepts, and a conclusion. Before starting with the rhetorical assignment, an effective tool was provided a set of questions that help determinate the trustworthiness of the article. The questions provided were about the context and rhetorical appeals such as ethos. Pathos, kairos, style, logos, and the organization with this it provided that structure to start the paper.

The last assignment was an annotated bibliography in which the theme was a free choice. An annotated bibliography is a set of sources listed in alphabetical order with a summary, analyze, and evaluation about the content of the source. In order to prepared for this, we had to take one day that we used to learn from the college data search base. In this data search, we look for articles about a theme of interest, after looking for they were going to be put in a format provided by the professor. The format consisted on providing the author, title, publication, summary, analyzation, evaluation, and a conclusion from all sources. After getting all the data organized in the annotated bibliography, a synthesis exploration need it to be created. The synthesis exploration consisted of a brief synthesis of the annotated bibliography structured with an introduction, body, and conclusion.

In this assignment, my topic of preference was illegal immigration in the U.S.. I choose this topic since that was one of the principal topics that had been around since Obama became president. I founded particularly interesting to find out about how illegal immigration can cause benefits or damages to the country. I have done research papers in the past, but this is the first time I had used this king of format. Even when the format at first seems to be a lot of extra work, at the end it became a handy rule in the organization of my paper. I was able to localize the data that I need it at the moment faster compare to just having all my data in a pile and look thru it.

Every one of the assignments mentioned above we will receive and provide a peer review either physically or electronically. The peer review was a excellent tool because provided a different prospective to ideas already placed. I still need to work on my role as a peer reviewer since this is the first time I have done thru the whole semester. My experience is not a wide as I wish it could be, but I learned to ask myself question about the paper I am reading in order to identify if the piece is been well stated.

Writing this portfolio was fun since it provided the chance to go back and think about what you have done thru out the whole semester. At first it seems to be a useless just something more to do in order to obtain a grade, but now I enjoy the fact of recapitulating all my assignments also help me realize the usefulness that the assignments give me.

What’s The Matter With Kids Today?

The article What’s The Matter With Kids Today? Amy Goldwasser talks about computers, cellphones, tex messaging, instant messaging, and iPods impact that had cause among teenagers. She said that, technology advancement can be use as a tool of learning enlargement, and that is also being use by teenagers to develop their social network profile. Goldwasser also believes, “ We need to start trusting our kids to speak as they online”(Goldwasser,p. 239). Even thought, technology sometimes seems to be an obstacle in humans grown, is just a source of compact knowledge.

Goldwasser said, “There are about 33 million Americans who are fluent in texting, e-mailing, blogging, IM’ing, and constantly amending their profile on social network sites” (Goldwasser, p. 237). This statement is quite right and what is critically that the numbers grow every day; we should take the benefits that our teens are gaining. As an example, teens write about their feelings and emotions on their social network which creates a better reasoning and understanding on self-reflection, and helps them analyze real life situations. Texting has become more common that a phone call.

Now days, people want to multi-task their duties. Texting has become a convenient tool that helps instantaneity respond to massages while working on something else. Social network has made communication effectively, specially with those far away from us. Family members from another state or country had found a convenient tool that helps them communicate with their love ones. Many of the features provided by technology such as webcams, e-mails, social networks, and instant message, keep us update of what is currently going on without spending too much time writing a letter or even making a phone call. All this features are a free services, and does not limit to any size of the document, number of e-mails sent, and time spent in the webcam.

The internet had become a primary source of entertainment when people might what to explore their horizons. As Goldwasser states, “Teens now enjoying reading and writing more than before because it is less familiar to them and something different from being on a computer” (Goldwasser, p. 239). People especially teens will look for something different to consider besides what they already know. By being in their computer all the time eventually gets them tired, so they will look for something else to spend their time. Teens had advance their knowledge and acquainted the assumption that besides being on the computer chatting with their friends, they could use this source to complete their school duties. Her position does relay on the reality of how things that in the past were difficult to teen now had become a distraction for them.

Has the internet become an obsession to teens or is just society who expect them to be using it? Goldwasser states, “ The average teen chooses to spend and average of 16.7 hours a week reading and writing online” (Goldwasser, p. 239). This is not considered involuntary reading and writing, but is not that what teens do they write what they think and read about what they want. It has become a free alternative to know what you need to know. Teens show more interest in what grabs their attention since is something they want to do, the knowledge and understanding obtain will be greater. Our generation has set into do what you want as well as be allowed to do what ever you are capable of.

Goldwasser argues that we should combine forces with internet people and stop seeing it as an enemy. As she states, “If we work with, rather than against, the way this generation voluntarily takes in information - we might not be able to pick up the phone and expose tragic pockets of ignorance” (Goldwasser, p. 239). Instead of having people think that the internet is a waste of time stop and reflects upon and know that it has grown path to millions of information about history and literature.

Goldwasser has a valid point about how we should take advantage of technology instead of just complaining about it. We must develop a virtual life in our social networks, and that we do not care about the exterior world. We need to realize that most of our information comes from the internet that offers more conformity and accessibility to humans in many ways such as school duties, address founding, transferring personal information use one source to another as many others. We all need to start seeing internet as an essentially tool in everyone’s life, and we should stop fighting against and just join the movement and use the advantages.
